The process

Back to Nature

Back to Nature

Here at Mash, we are very conscious of the need to protect the environment and so throughout the entire brewing process we try to minimise any wastage and get maximum usage out of all our ingredients. Of course we use all natural ingredients in our beer but the brewing process also involves lots of water and other utilities to get from grain to glass. One task that all brewers grapple with is cleaning. Cleanliness throughout the entire brewing process is absolutely essential to produce a great beer. Especially during fermentation, conditioning and serving everything that comes into contact with our beloved beer must be kept meticulously clean to let great beer flavour shine through. So although we need products to help us do this – we try to keep these to a minimum – just enough to do the job. Also during brewing we recycle as much as possible at the brewery without compromising the quality of the finished beer. For instance the water that we use to cool our wort after boiling is kept and re-used for cleaning so that we have as little wastage as possible.

Another example of Mash’s “back to nature” approach can be found at the end of brew day. After we have mashed using malt and water and have finished using the malt, the leftover from the mash, called “spent grains” have to be disposed of ready to put the next batch in. Rather than dump these grains in the bin we have a local farmer who backs up his ute and loads them up, takes them home and feeds them to his cattle. Apparently they love it! So in the end -the cows are happy, Pete the farmer is happy and since it only costs us a pint or two of Pete’s favourite drop – Pale, and is great for the environment, we’re happy too….!!!
